The Canadian flag, the maple leaf known in French and Maple Leaf Flag (literally "flag in the Maple Leaf") in English, is the national flag and the national flag of Canada. This is a red flag with a white square in a stylized eleven-point red maple leaf. Adopted in 1965, it was the first national flag officially adopted in Canada to replace the Union Flag. The Canadian Red Ensign was used informally since the 1890s and was approved in 1945 by an Order in Council for "all occasions or places where it may be desirable to fly a distinctive Canadian flag."
