The hammer and sickle (Russian: серп и молот; pronounced: serp i molot) (☭) is a graphic symbol used to represent Communism, in its Leninist variant. It depicts the hammer and sickle proletariat worker peasants; their junction symbolizes the union between agricultural and industrial workers.
The symbol was originally a hammer crossed a plow, with the same meaning. The hammer and sickle, although used from 1917-1918, did not become an official symbol in 1922; before that, the plow and the hammer were used by the Red Army.
