Like the chèche for French troops, the keffiyeh is worn by the armed forces of the British Empire stationed in the Near East for almost a century. But it was during the Second World War and especially during the Campaign in North Africa that its use became widespread in troops deployed in high temperature areas. It retains its primary function of protection against the sun and dust.
