The flag of Slovakia (in Slovak: vlajka Slovenska) was adopted on September 3, 1992. It is a tricolor flag composed of three horizontal bands using the pan-Slavic colors: the upper band is white, the middle blue and the lower red. The national shield, of neo-Gothic type, is placed on the flag to distinguish it from other Slavic flags: offset from the side of the flagpole, it encroaches on the upper and lower bands of the flag. The proportions of the flag are 2:3. This flag with dimensions of 1.5 × 1 m is also the flag of the Slovak Merchant Navy. It is one of the four official symbols of the Slovak Republic.
